Homecoming, Spirit Week kicks off with Skittles Day

Plans are under way for Chino Valley High School's 2011 Spirit Week and Homecoming celebration, which begins Monday, Oct. 17, and closes out with the Homecoming football game against River Valley at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21.

Skittles Day starts the festivities on Monday with students encouraged to dress up in class colors: seniors in yellow, juniors in green, red for the sophomores, and freshmen in pink. The Spirit Week activity for Day 1 is Barbie Jell-O Bobbing, in which Jell-O molds will be set with Barbie doll pieces inside. Students will "bob" through the Jell-O, picking out the pieces, trying to put Barbie back together.

On Tuesday, each class will pick their own theme, and Tanner Buntin will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for most bananas eaten in one minute.

Wednesday is Costume Day, with the class with the best costumes earning Spirit Points.

Blue and Gray Day is Thursday, when all students are encouraged to wear school colors. The morning assembly will feature a Glamour Guys dance contest, followed by an all-day carnival on the football field. The carnival will feature booths with carnival attractions and games, including a dunk tank and bounce castles. School clubs and local businesses will sponsor the booths.

Also scheduled for Thursday are a barbeque and the Bash-a-Car event where, for a small donation, students will be allowed to take a swing with a mallet at a junked car.

Thursday closes with the annual Powder Puff football game at 6 p.m., with the Glamour Guys' halftime performance. The public is welcome to attend the Powder Puff game free of charge, with proceeds from snack bar sales going to the CVHS football program. A bonfire also will take place.

Spirit Week excitement comes to a head on Friday night, starting with a tailgate party in the parking lot, with school clubs and local businesses sponsoring food stands. The Cougars face off against the Dust Devils at 7 p.m. with the Homecoming dance after the game.

Any businesses interested in sponsoring a carnival booth or attraction, or wanting to participate in the tailgate party may call 928-636-2298.
