Yavapai College baseball teams drops West District opener
The Yavapai College baseball team dropped its first game of the NJCAA Western District playoffs on Thursday, falling 8-5 No. 21 Lamar Community College (Colo.) in Casa Grande.
"We got to their starting pitcher, but their closers came in and did a good job of taking away the momentum," said YC coach Sky Smeltzer, whose team came back from an 8-1 deficit thanks to a four-run sixth to make it 8-5.
YC's Dean Friedberg was 3 for 3 with a two-run home run, while Josh Anderson had a double and Ethan Leiter had two RBIs.
Zak Miller, who took the loss, gave up five runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings.
He struck out six and walked none.
Next up for YC is a loser's bracket matchup with ACCAC rival and tourney host Central Arizona College. First pitch is 9 a.m.
CAC, which lost 8-3 to Salt Lake Community College on Thursday, is 4-2 against YC this season.
In March, Yavapai College swept a doubleheader in Casa Grande. A month later in Prescott, Central Arizona swept a twinbill, Last week in the NJCAA Region I Championship Series, the Vaqueros swept YC 12-1 and 1-0 to take the title.
The winner will advance to play the winner of the Lamar/Salt Lake City game at 3 p.m.
The loser will be eliminated.
