As we turn the corner from the somewhat windy days of spring and reach toward the warmer days of summer, there's no doubt that our extra curricular activities will wander to the outdoors.
Activities like the game of tennis where both sexes, adults-seniors and kids, can work up a sweat while enjoying some competitive spirit, friendship and camaraderie - and can play the game without spending an arm and a leg to do it.
A couple racquets and a can of balls is all you need to get started and those can all be obtained for less than $10 (using one of our many Prescott thrift stores) or less if you happen to have racquets already. A can of new balls can be purchased for around $2.
If you find your skills are rusty or non-existent you might want to consider brushing up by jumping into the Yavapai College tennis class that starts the week of June 6. All you have to do is get on their web site to sign up for their evening class that runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
If you're better than a novice but don't know anyone to play against you can try the Tuesday and Thursday "Drop-In-Tennis" that runs at the college "Roughrider" courts currently from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for only a buck. (Bring a can of balls.) It's primarily doubles and you're sure to meet more than a few folks you'll enjoy.
The Prescott Racquet Club has many tennis outlets (including a weekly Kids Camp), as does the Prescott Parks and Recreation that can help attend to your tennis needs.
Personally, if you want to see everything that's available in this regard, go to the Prescott Area Tennis Association's web site and find out where the public courts are and all the varied programs to become a part of. There's also a players list of which you are welcome to join and at no cost. Under search, type in prescotttennis.com and you'll easily find this site.
And don't forget the younger kids, 10 and under, who might like to try the new tennis program called "QuickStart" with smaller court sizes and low compression balls. There are one-day and week long clinics available in Prescott and Prescott Valley that can be seen on the PATA web site for the summer.
The following names, numbers and dates will give you all the tools you need to find the right tournaments, programs and events for you and your kids for the summer in regard to tennis activity.
Hope to see you all out a lot this summer smacking that little green ball around laughing, meeting new friends and having fun.
