Yavapai College Roundup: Roughriders take two on baseball diamond

The 19th-ranked Yavapai College baseball team swept a home doubleheader from ACCAC Division II and fifth-ranked 5 ranked Paradise Valley Community College, 9-3 and 13-5 on Tuesday.

In the opener, YC (27-11 overall, 15-5 ACCAC) scored a run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.

The Pumas then scored a single run in the fourth inning, and two in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

The Roughrider bats came alive in the sixth inning as they pushed across six runs to take a commanding lead.

Andrew Walter threw six innings to improve his record to 4-3. The lanky right-hander scattered four hits and struck out nine.

Offensively, Dean Friedberg was 3 for 3 with a triple, a double and an RBI.

Nolan Clark was 2 for 3 with a double, while Albert Alvarez was 1 for 1 with two RBIs.

In the nightcap, YC fell behind in the first inning after a Paradise Valley two-run home run.

Starting pitcher Zak Miller (5-0) settled down to stop the Pumas' momentum.

In the third inning, YC pounded out six hits and scored five runs and added two more in the fourth inning to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

In their half of the fifth, the opponent added two more runs to cut the deficit to three runs. In the seventh and eighth innings, the Roughriders pushed three runs across in each inning to take control.

Miller got the victory with help from Robbie Ingram (3 2/3 innings, two hits, two strikeouts) and Miguel Silva (one run and one hit).

At the plate, Clark was 4 for 4 with four RBIs, Alvarez was 3 for 3, Ethan Leiter was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Tony Piazza was 2 for 5 with four RBIs.

YC plays a doubleheader at Cochise College (17-17, 7-11) on Saturday. First pitch is noon.

SOFTBALL

The top-ranked Roughriders swept visiting Scottsdale CC, 12-1 and 11-0.

In the opener, Kirsten Lambertson was 3 for 3 with two home runs and seven RBIs; Alex Landon was 2 for 3 with three RBIs; Estela Pinon was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Tessa Fanning had a double.

Pinon fanned five and gave up one hit in three innings to earn the win.

In Game 2, Miraya Montiel was 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs; Pinon was 2 for 2 with a triple, a home run and four RBIs and Danielle Muniz was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Amelia Willadsen struck out two and gave up two hits in three innings to nab the win.

YC hosts Paradise Valley CC in doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is noon.
