Obituary: Marian Nelson Root Love

Marian Nelson Root Love, 93, of Prescott, Ariz., formally of East Lansing, Mich., passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, March 11, 2011.

Marian was born in Lawton, Mich., to Daniel Thompson Root and Leona Claire Nelson Root, the third child of six. The family owned and operated a grape farm, supplying grapes to Welch's and around the country.

She graduated from Lawton High School, Parson's Business College and Lansing Community College in Office Administration.

In 1949, Marian met and married Lt. Col. USAF William Barclay Love and together they joyfully raised four children. In 1960, Marian was employed at Michigan State University in the music department, later moving to the dean's office, College of Arts & Letters. After 22 years, she retired and received the Distinguished Staff Award.

Marian and William were adventurous world travelers and active in their community. Marian was a regent, chaplain, librarian, courtroom chairman, parliamentarian and Good Citizen Chairman for the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lansing chapter. For several years, she was the wedding planner of East Minster Presbyterian, as well as superintendent of Sunday school classes. Many weekends were spent volunteering at McRee House and providing Meals On Wheels.

Marian is survived by her children, Thomas F. Love (Elizabeth), Barbara E. Featherly (Robert) and Julia R. Garfield (Brian). She has four grandchildren, Amberian Buck (Eric), Zackery Garfield (Amanda), Jacquelyn Featherly, Aaron Garfield (Kacy) and five great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years William, her son Charles and granddaughter Kimberly Faith Featherly.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Las Fuentes Resort Village, 1035 Scott Drive, Prescott, Ariz.
