The Hot Spot: Roaming Around
Summer is finally here, the local music scene keeps growing, and at the rate I'm going, I will age prematurely just to keep you all informed! Last weekend was incredibly busy, so instead of focusing on any particular band, I will just tell you about all of it.
Friday night kicked off the Prescott Summer Concert Series at the Courthouse Plaza, starting with none other than those amazing blues-icians of Road One South. And of course, they delivered. Ted Leonard and his crew (Prescott Pro Sound) helped make the guys sound even more phenomenal than usual. Great crowd, perfect weather, and people of all ages utilizing the dance floor until well after dusk!
Then I was off to Coyote Joe's, where Big Daddy D & the Dynamites dominated! These guys never cease to amaze me with the utter enthusiasm they bring to the stage. Naturally, the dance floor was crowded and a good time was had by all.
Saturday started fairly early for me at the Pony Espresso in Prescott Valley, where Road One South continued with their triple assault weekend by performing gratis to help raise money (and awareness) for the Erdheim Chester Global Alliance. Great turnout ... thank you to everybody who participated and helped make this fundraiser a successful event.
By 9 p.m. I was back in town to check out the happenings ... and got stuck at CoJoe's/Annie's Attic. The CheekTones owned the patio and the place was completely packed. Brian Moss was in attendance and with him and Inesis Vitols battling it out on the strings they certainly had the crowd going strong. Incidentally, by this time my voice was starting to sound just a little more manly on account of all the cheering I did!
Annie's Attic featured the three-man ensemble LoudHouse. This is an experienced, and technically very sound, cover band from Phoenix. I truly appreciated the fact that they didn't try to sell the audience on the same old songs every other cover band seems to be so fond off - in other words, the easy ones. LoudHouse will be back next month, and I will at that point provide you all with a more in depth look at them.
Sunday featured Road One South at CoJoe's. This was the first time they performed here and it worked. It was busy with plenty of audience participation. One guy (sorry I forgot to get your name) got on stage with them and showed off his considerable skill on the guitar, but ultimately, he was no match for the immensely talented Ed Flaherty who ended up showing him how it's really done!
Also on Sunday, Matt's Saloon hosted the 7th annual Jamaican Me Crazy Beach Party - a fundraiser for the Youth Football and Cheer Association. Ten tons of sand, great food donated by local eateries, raffles, beachwear and flip-flops, fantastic live music by Grantman and the Island Beat ... it was awesome and they managed to raise over $8,000 for their cause. Definitely count me in for next year!
Calendar: Friday: 8 p.m. - Road One South at the Raven Café. Saturday: 8 p.m. - FiLaBuStA at CoJoe's. 9:30 p.m. - Sir Harrison at Annie's Attic. 11 p.m. - Voodoo Sex Cult at Sundance's.
