Tourist dies in fall from ledge on Bell Rock in Sedona
A 51-year-old woman visiting Arizona from Japan died Thursday after she fell 50 to 100 feet from a ledge in the Bell Rock area in Sedona, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office reported.
Deputies recovered the body around 2:45 p.m. Thursday, more than two hours after she had been reported missing, YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn stated in a news release. Authorities identified the victim as Yumiko Hayashi. They contacted the Japanese Consulate to seek help in locating her family. Members of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Response Team, Back County Unit, with help from Verde Search and Rescue, removed her body Friday morning and released it to the county medical examiner.
The search for Hayashi began at noon Thursday when deputies arrived at the Bell Rock Inn to investigate a possible missing person, D'Evelyn reported.
Someone had turned in a backpack belonging to a registered guest of the inn around 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The backpack, found at the base of Bell Rock, contained the woman's identification, cash, personal items and a Japanese passport.
Deputies learned the woman was last seen near the Bell Rock trailhead around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
