Police say gas station fell victim to 2 robberies by same 2 men in 2 days
Prescott police arrested two men Monday on burglary charges for stealing money from a gas station cash machine two days in a row after one of the men told officers that he distracted a clerk while another man stole the money.
Officers booked Dylan Mirich, 18, of Prescott Valley and Dylan Cuthbert, 18, of Prescott into the Yavapai County Jail on charges of burglary.
On Monday morning, police answered a call about a burglary over the weekend at a Shell gas station convenience store.A manager told the officer that between late Friday night and early Saturday morning, he found a canister of $40 in five dollar bills missing from the cash machine behind the counter. He checked with employees and found no one had misplaced the money, according to the police report.
The manager told the officer that between 2-2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a man entered the store while the clerk was distracted and stole a canister with $50 in $10 bills from the cashbox, according to the police report. The manager saw on surveillance video that at the time of the robbery, the clerk went outside to help a regular customer, identified as Mirich, who said the air hose wasn't working.
When the clerk checked the hose, it was working, said Prescott acting Deputy Police Chief Andy Reinhardt.
On Monday, Mirich came back to the gas station and the owner called police.
Mirich told officers that he and Cuthbert had conspired between them to distract the clerk with the air hose, and Cuthbert went into the store to take the cash while the clerk spoke to Mirich, Reinhardt said.
