New road alignments begin this week at Cordes Jct. interchange

Drivers passing through the Interstate 17/Cordes Junction interchange in coming months will be shifted onto detours on southbound I-17 and northbound and southbound Highway 69.

According to a news release from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the detours will begin this week and will continue until the completion of construction on the interchange's new bridges.

The work is a part of the reconstruction of the I-17/Highway 69 interchange at Cordes Junction. The detours will provide a safe work zone for the crews working on the project.

The work on I-17 will require the closure of one northbound and one southbound lane through the work zone, as crews complete the new detour crossover on southbound I-17. A minimum of one lane in each direction on I-17 and Highway 69 will remain open, according to the ADOT release.

ADOT is advising drivers to be aware of the 11-foot-wide lanes at the crossovers along southbound I-17.

In addition to the work on I-17, crews will be working on northbound and southbound Highway 69 overnight Thursday into the early-morning hours of today, which will require a single lane closure. Flaggers will be present to allow crews to re-stripe the roadway and switch traffic onto the new detour routes.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

The speed limit on I-17 will be 55 miles per hour until the crossover is removed and the new bridge is completed over I-17. The speed limit on Highway 69 is 45 miles per hour through the construction zone.
