Prescott firefighters rescue hiker stranded on Granite Dells
A 19-year-old man who became stuck while climbing in the Granite Dells was rescued Wednesday afternoon by Prescott firefighters, Prescott Fire Division Chief Eric Kriwer said.
At 1:45 p.m., firefighters answered a call about a man who couldn't get down from a rock face about 75 feet from the ground in the Granite Dells off of Highway 89 near the Canyons subdivision, Kriwer said.
"The hiker was not an experienced rock climber, and had gotten into a position where he was not able to get back to safety on his own," Kriwer said.
The man used his cellphone to tell a family member that he needed help, and the family member called 911. Before calling his family, the man said he spent about 90 minutes on the rock face trying to get down, Kriwer said.
Firefighters were on the scene for an hour and used the 75-foot ladder truck to reach the man and bring him down safely.
The Prescott Fire Department urges people to choose their hiking route wisely and reminds them to always bring a cellphone with them, Kriwer said.
