Coffee shop concocts the right blend of menu items, ambiance
Jamey and Andrea Mauk are taking a real shot on their newest business venture.
While they continue to run their commercial photography business in Wisconsin, the Mauks bought Cuppers Coffee House at 226 S. Cortez St. in late January.
"It's a creative, fun, social environment," Andrea said. "It's kind of like 'Cheers' without the alcohol."
Prescott residents flock to the coffee house for get-togethers with friends or even business meetings.
That's something that Andrea can relate to as a business owner who often found herself chatting with clients with a mug in her hand.
Cuppers is a successful business in the right community, which is what drew Andrea and Jamey to buy it after doing their homework.
Jamey said the character of the business was another key factor. "(It's) the ambiance - the flavor of the place."
"I just love the environment," Andrea added. "It's a coffee shop and a home."
Jamey is able to videoconference with his staff in Chippewa Falls, which is about two hours east of Minneapolis, Minn.
As odd as it might sound to some people, running photography and coffee house businesses share some similarities, according to Jamey.
"They both employ creative, artistic people who are passionate about what they do," he said.
Andrea and Jamey made small changes to a rather full menu, offering breakfast, brunch and lunch items.
Popular breakfast items include "skinny pancakes" - six thin pancakes with homemade buttery syrup; waffles; quiches; and a breakfast sandwich with a choice of ham or spinach with two eggs and cheddar cheese on a wheat bread, bagel or croissant.
The tuna and the mozzarella spinach with roasted red peppers and balsamic sauce are hot sandwich choices. Cuppers also offers six different salads.
On the beverage side, Jamey and Andrea offer frozen blended, over-ice coffee, tea and cappuccino drinks. They always have a light, dark, a medium house blend and decaffeinated coffee choices.
The shop is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 445-1636 or visit www.cupperscoffeehouse.com.
