Maxine Louise Sammeli (née Hodge) was born Jan. 21,1940, in Phoenix, Ariz., to Anna and James Hodge.
She is survived by her brother Norman Hodge, and sisters Katherine Fenner and JoAnne Brooks. Their father was a hard-rock miner and they moved frequently. Maxine's love for reading and her family's love were her stability.
Maxine raised three children, Cecelia Sammeli- Simpson, Jacob Sammeli and Joanna Sammeli-Zimmerman in Henderson, Nev., where she worked in casinos and drove a taxicab.
She moved to Prescott, Ariz., to be near family and enjoy her grandchildren, Joshua Sammeli, Tyler Trott, Hannah Sammeli and Schuyler Sammeli. There she worked for the census before retiring.
In 2003, she moved to Spokane to be with most of her family and new granddaughters, Zoe and Eliza Simpson. Her wonderful sense of humor, intelligence and love of games led her to the East Central Community Center where she made many friends.
Maxine's family would like to thank hospice for helping her when no one else could ease the pain of pancreatic cancer, and say "Thank You!" to The Center for the outstanding life celebration that they provided. As our Mom would say, "We had the time of our lives!"
