Prescott man dies during bike event in Florida
A Prescott man bicycling in a "Share the Road" event died Wednesday afternoon in Newberry, Fla., after he was struck by a pickup truck.
At 12:42 p.m., Florida Highway patrol officers answered a call about a collision between a truck and bike on State Road 26 in Newberry, according to the police report.
Robert King, 65, of Prescott, was riding his Cannondale R300 bicycle eastbound on the paved apron of State Road 26 when a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Brian Bunting, 23, of Newberry, drifted into a paved apron and struck King's bicycle, ejecting King from his bike, according to the police report.
Bunting told the officer he was distracted just prior to the collision, according to the police report.
Alachua County Fire Rescue drove King to Shands-UF Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the police report.
At the time of this crash, King, who was wearing a helmet, was taking part in a Bike Florida and Share the Road campaign-sponsored ride that left from High Springs, traveled through Trenton, and ended in Newberry.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash and charges are pending against Bunting, according to the police report.
