Obituary: George A. Pearson November 27, 1915 - October 15, 2010

George A Pearson, born on Nov. 27, 1915, in Stratford, Conn., went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 15, 2010, in Prescott, Ariz.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife May Elizabeth (Betty) of 69 years and three children, daughter Barbara Barry of Concord, Calif., daughter Georgia and husband John Mate of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and son G. Allen Pearson IV of Bradenton, Fla. George also has five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

George, son of G. Allen Pearson III and Edna Savoye Coons Pearson, moved to Arizona in 1928 and they settled in the Phoenix area. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. degree in 1939, and soon followed that with a M.S. in 1941. While at Tucson he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Cavalry. George was also an active member of Scabbard and Blade.

During WWII George served with General Stillwell in China, Burma and India, where he achieved the rank of Major.

Upon returning from active duty in China, George returned to college at the University of California at Berkeley to earn a Ph.D. in plant physiology. In 1951, after graduation, he joined the United States Department of Agriculture and moved to Riverside where he worked at the Salinity Laboratory as a Research Scientist. While with the Department of Agriculture he went to several different parts of the country conducting research until his retirement.

In 1977, George retired from Federal service and he and Betty moved back to Prescott, Ariz. While here they had a very active retirement traveling in their motor home "The Orange Bird," and experiencing the National Parks and wonders of the United States. They even did a 14-day river-rafting trip down the Colorado River. George was active in church work, the camper club, stamp club and the camera club.

A celebration of George's life will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at the Prescott National Cemetery with full military honors.
