Four alcohol retailers were cited for selling alcohol to people under the age of 21 during a covert underage buyer detail Oct. 9 by Prescott Valley and Prescott police officers and Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies with help from the Prescott Police Explorers.
Between 6:30 and 11:30 p.m., Explorer Scouts tried to buy alcohol from 32 alcohol retailers along Highway 69 in Prescott and Prescott Valley, said Sgt. Brandon Bonney, spokesman for the Prescott Valley Police Department.
Most retailers checked the Explorer Scouts' identification and refused to sell to them, but officers saw seven violations and four businesses - Robert's Market, the Fry's on Glassford Hill Road, the Maverick at Glassford Hill and the AM/PM on Walker Road - failed the compliance check, Bonney said.
Although there are different reasons that some clerks do not check identification, it is imperative that they make an effort to do so, Bonney said.
The fact that a clerk failed the compliance check is not always a reflection of practices of the business, Bonney said.
The underage buyer detail was funded by MATForce's underage drinking taskforce. There will be more details like this soon, Bonney said.
