Wreaths Across America to honor fallen soldiers deadline approaches
Quad City area American Gold Star Mothers are up against deadline to honor local fallen soldiers for the Wreaths Across America project on Dec. 11.
They've been collecting money to buy wreaths for the Prescott National Cemetery, but it's a drop in the bucket.
The cemetery contains 3,200 veterans' gravesites, said Gold Star Mother Jasmine Crowl, of Prescott Valley. In 2009, Crowl reported, people donated 1,500 wreaths. As of Friday, Nov. 19, Wreaths Across America officials told her only 40 are designated for Prescott. The deadline to donate for this year is Nov. 25.
"We need support from our community," said Crowl, whose son, Cornell Chao, was killed in action in Iraq in 2007.
Individual wreath sponsorship is $15.
The Wreaths Across America organization's mission is Remember the fallen; Honor those who serve; and Teach our children.
More than 425 locations nationwide will participate in a wreath laying ceremony on Dec. 11. at noon Eastern Standard Time; locally at the Prescott National Cemetery at 10 a.m.
People can donate online at: www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.
Group ID No. is AZGSM002; Cemetery ID No. is AZPNCP.
