Editorial: Ag Day a step back in time
At age 87, my mother doesn't care for parties where she's the center of attention. She likes her family around and enjoys outings, so this year we kept it simple.
For her birthday on May 8, we went to the Chino Valley High School Agricultural Experience Day at the Cooper farm. Interesting enough, the event's theme was "Back to Basics," and featured such activities as cheese-making, milking a cow, saddling a horse and more. My mother grew up in the Depression, when people relied on the basics in life - things looked pretty good if you had a milk cow and a horse to ride to town. She rode a gentle mule to school as a very small child in New Mexico. She also spent many hours daydreaming while milking the family cow.
Saturday's event was a step back in time for her. She enjoyed a sample of peach cobbler and enjoyed the petting zoo, as well as a tractor ride around the farm.
Thanks CVHS FFA for keeping alive the skills of yesteryear for my mom.
