Les Stukenberg/The Daily Courier<br>Mechelle Smith and Jayme Wederski work on owner Gail Smith’s hair at the new 5th Avenue Hair Studio in Prescott Tuesday morning.

It's a family affair at Gail Smith's new salon.

Smith opened 5th Avenue Hair Studio at 1000 Ainsworth Drive, Suite A100, in April, and works there with her daughter, Mechelle, and Mechelle's friend Jaymie Wederski.

Smith brings 38 years as a hairstylist to the salon, where she does hair coloring, perms, cuts and highlights, and sells hair care products.

Smith said she enjoys helping people realize their attractiveness.

"Every woman is beautiful. You just have to bring it out," she said.

Smith said she got the coiffing bug as a child doing her doll's hair and moved on to work on her aunt's hair when she was 6 years old.

"I was a girly-girl," she said.

After graduating from Prescott High School, Smith went on to beauty schools here and in Phoenix. That led her to manage a couple of salons in the city before branching out on her own to take more control of her own career and get to know her clients better.

"We offer more of a personal environment," Mechelle added.

Mechelle brings three and a half years of her own experience to her styling chair, with an emphasis on weave extensions, along with coloring and cuts.

"We take time to have a full-on consultation with (clients)," she said. "We evaluate everything and get them what they want."

Wederski graduated from high school with Mechelle and both went to beauty school together.

Wederski relishes her new job doing colors, cuts and a temporary hair straightening technique known as a Brazillian blowout.

"I'm like the sister from another mother," she said. "It's nice to work with people who appreciate you."

The salon is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The ladies are also happy to worth with men and children. People can walk in or make an appointment.
