Robert D. Helmer

Robert D. Helmer, born Aug. 2, 1929, in Ypsilanti, Mich., passed away May 1, 2010, in Prescott, Ariz. Bob grew up in Ypsilanti. He married Ruth L. Hodges Dec. 15, 1956, and they were together for 53 years.

They raised their children in Niles, Mich. Upon his

retirement they made their home in Chino Valley, Ariz.

His two children are Susan Jassam and Jeff Helmer and his granddaughter is Layla Jassam. He is also survived by his son-in-law Faozi Jassam and daughter-in-law Jean Helmer.

He graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in

elementary education and an M.S. in elementary administration and supervision. He was certified in school social work at Michigan State University and worked in the field for 26 years.

He was always active in community service. He was involved

with the Boy Scouts in his youth and as an adult he helped by serving or organizing community programs: Niles Assoc. of Exceptional Children, Big Brothers, Berrien Country anti-poverty program, Reg. Inter-city committee for developmentally disabled persons, Berrien County Mental Health Center, Parents Anonymous, and two local child abuse task forces.

In the Chino Valley area, he was a member of the High Desert Artists and volunteered in a local elementary school art class. He enjoyed printmaking and teaching it to others, especially his granddaughter Layla. He will be missed by his family and friends.

A celebration of his life will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 W.
