Sex offender arrested for failing to register

Chino Valley police officers arrested a man Tuesday who failed to register as a convicted sex offender with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

On Monday, Chino Valley police detectives received information from authorities in Delaware that Michael Decker, 41, a convicted sex offender from that state, may have been living in Chino Valley for the past year, said Commander Mark Garcia of the Chino Valley Police Department.

Decker had not registered with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office as required by state law, Garcia said.

On Tuesday, officers found Decker at his workplace in the 800 block of South Highway 89.

"When Decker saw officers approaching him, he tried to walk out the back door, but officers were waiting for him there," Garcia said.

Officers booked Decker into the Camp Verde jail on one count of failing to register as a sex offender and on a felony warrant issued in Delaware for failing to register as a sex offender there as well.

Garcia said the Chino Valley police often make this type of arrest.

"We enforce the sex offender laws seriously," Garcia said.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Sex Offender Compliance Unit arrested six registered sex offenders in the past six months for failing to register within 72 hours upon changing their address, which is a class 4 Felony, said Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. Three of the six men had prior convictions for failing to register.

Currently, 401 registered sex offenders live in Yavapai County.

Managing Yavapai County's sex offender population is a collaborative effort between law enforcement, probation/parole, mental health providers and the public, D'Evelyn said.

If you would like to sign up to receive electronic sex offender notifications, or to obtain further information, visit the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office website at www.ycsoaz.gov, look under the Public Information section and click on Offender Alert.

The Sheriff's Office uses the Offender Watch system to manage and monitor the whereabouts and conduct compliance status of the registered offenders in Yavapai County instantaneously throughout the day as offender addresses and other offender information is updated with the Sex Offender Compliance Unit.

Users may enter any address in the county and see real-time information on the publishable offenders within a specified radius of the address entered.
