IRS has millions for late Arizona tax filers
The Internal Revenue Service is reporting it has more than $33 million for nearly 40,000 Arizonans who failed to file their 2006 federal income tax returns.
The agency estimates the median unclaimed refund for the 2006 tax year is around $500 for the roughly 39,900 Arizona taxpayers who have to file to get their returns.
The window to claim the refunds is April 15 and taxpayers do not face a penalty from the agency for filing a late return qualifying for a refund.
The IRS is reminding taxpayers trying for their 2006 return that the agency will hold the check if the taxpayer hasn't filed returns for 2007 or 2008 and the agency will apply the refund to money the taxpayer owes.
