A Yavapai County Sheriff's Office patrol sergeant arrested a man this past Wednesday on charges of vehicle theft after the suspect was found driving a truck stolen from a Cottonwood dealership, a spokesman said.

Deputies booked Sergio Machado, 32, of Cottonwood, into the Camp Verde jail on charges of vehicle theft.

Machado was released on a $5,000 bond pending a court date of June 10, said Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

At 10:30 p.m., a patrol sergeant saw a blue 2010 Chevy Silverado truck speeding south on I-17 in the Black Canyon City area, D'Evelyn said. When the sergeant stopped the truck, the driver, later identified as Machado, couldn't provide identification, registration or proof of owning the truck.

The sergeant noticed plastic liners on the floor, new floor mats wrapped in plastic, a vehicle pricing sheet attached to the window from Larry Green Chevrolet, and a three-day trip permit license attached to the license plate frame.

"An alert sergeant out there stopped this truck, called the dealership to determine it was stolen, and arrested Machado," D'Evelyn said.

A dealership manager told the sergeant that several trucks had been stolen after a burglary at the dealership where keys were stolen, and filed a theft report with the Cottonwood Police Department.

Officers arrested another man, Eric Salazar, 31, near the border in Bisbee, driving another truck stolen from the dealership, D'Evelyn said.

Officers found three trucks in the U.S. and two in Mexico, valued at more than $200,000, with the help of the On-Star® vehicle security and communications system, and the Douglas Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety Stolen Vehicle Taskforce, National Insurance Crime Bureau and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"Cottonwood police continue their investigation," D'Evelyn said. "All the cars are back."
