Please, drivers, stop for school buses

Editor:

We have a problem in this community with individuals failing to stop for school buses. In some cases, parents dropping off children at school become angry when they have to stop for a school bus with lights flashing.

I have counted on several different occasions cars passing school buses with light flashing. In one case a woman flipped off the bus driver when he waved his arms at her to stop and observe the red stop sign and flashing lights.

Recently, I stood at the intersection and counted cars who failed to stop at the red stop sign located on Granville Parkway and Voltaire, which leads to Granville Elementary. In 20 minutes' time I counted 51 cars and 7 buses that failed to stop at the sign.

In one case a child was crossing the street in the crosswalk when a driver pulled up very fast and slammed on his brakes, stopping two feet from the child in the crosswalk. He then gunned his engine to frighten the child. These kinds of actions need to be stopped before an innocent schoolchild is needlessly hurt or killed.

Why do parents of children feel that observing the law is for the other fellow? I am sure if it were their children getting on the bus or in the crosswalk, they would raise holy hell to anyone who would listen.
