Mildred Haas Thoman

Mildred was born March 18, 1928 in Stafford, Kan., and died Dec. 22, 2010, in Phoenix, Ariz. Mildred's parents, Louise and Cyril Haas moved to Tucson when Mildred was nine months of age.

Mildred said she had a simple, neighborhood education since she attended Roskruge Elementary/Junior High then went across the street to Tucson High School (class of 1946), then up the street to the University of Arizona where she earned a B.S. degree in Home Economics (1950) and a Med/Library Science degree (1970). Following graduation in 1950, Mildred went to Prescott, Ariz. to teach. There she met Jack Thoman. Jack and Mildred married Aug. 11, 1951. They had four children.

For health issues the family moved back to Tucson in 1960. Mildred was a stay-at-home Mom until 1971, when she returned to the career field as the librarian at Pistor Junior High, Spring Junior High and Lynn/Urquides Elementary. She retired from TUSD in 1988.

Mildred and Jack enjoyed their family, their friends, 13 cruises and other travels during retirement until Jack's passing Aug. 31, 2001, after 50 years of marriage. Mildred continued enjoying her family, her friends, motorcycling with her brother Bill on his Ultra-classic Harley Davidson, and driving her red Cadillac DeVille named "Rojo." ("Rojo," meaning red in Spanish, was Jack's nickname as a red-haired youth.)

Mildred was predeceased by her parents, Louise and Cyril Haas; husband, Jack; daughter Lana; brother, Bill Haas; aunt, Mary E. Dill. She is survived by her son, Drew Thoman; daughter, Mary Lou (Robert) Klem; daughter, Jill Thoman; grandchildren, Jacob, Andrew, Jacey and Kyle; granddogs, Shea, Sierra and Rusty; and the red Cadillac DeVille named "Rojo".
