3-year-old found wandering
Prescott Valley police arrested a woman Thursday on charges including child neglect after her 3-year-old son was found walking across Tani Road with no shoes on his feet.
At 11:18 a.m., an officer answered a call about a lost child found at a business near Florentine and Robert Road.
The woman who found the boy told the officer she saw him walking across the road on his tip toes as if the asphalt burned his feet so she brought him to her business and called police.
When the officer went to the boy's home in the 8300 block of Florentine to talk with his mother, Ashley Kelley, 22, the officer smelled the odor of burning marijuana coming from inside the home, said Sgt. Brandon Bonney, spokesman for the Prescott Valley Police Department.
Kelley told the officer she had been smoking marijuana with a friend in the apartment.
Officers found a marijuana pipe near a 5-month-old child in a rocker and other items of drug paraphernalia in the home, Bonney said.
Kelley was not aware that her son was missing and told officers he may have gone out the back door, but officers found no evidence that the child left the home that way, Bonney said.
When Kelley's husband, Chris Mcleod, 31, came home he told the officers the marijuana was his, Bonney said.
Officers learned Kelley had a valid warrant for her arrest and booked her into Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde for the warrant as well as on charges of child neglect, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers cited and released Mcleod on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Child Protective Services took custody of the 3-year-old boy, Bonney said.
