Cordes Community Association General Meeting Thursday
The next Cordes Lakes Community Association General Meeting will take place on Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Center, 16357 S. Cordes Lakes Drive. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Speaker for August meeting is still not confirmed.
Mayer Fish/Chicken Fry on Friday
The Mayer Elder's Club will cook up its monthly fish fry/chicken BBQ starting at 4:30 p.m. Price is $7 for adults and $4 for children and proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels.
Learn about comets at Highlands Center on Friday
Ever want to learn about comets and asteroids? What are they? Where do they come from? Are they a threat to our planet? Come to the Highlands Center for Natural History 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, for a presentation on the subject. There will be a history of comets and asteroids, eyewitness accounts of the most spectacular meteor showers in history, and the impact of these interstellar visitors on our society. The Highlands Center is located at 1375 S. Walker Road, on the way to Lynx Lake.
Old Cordes Station anniversary on Saturday
Come celebrate Cathy Cordes' five-year anniversary at the Old Cordes Station Store. There will be hamburgers and hotdogs. Everyone welcome!

Brunch at the Community Center
The Tuesday Club is planning a brunch for Aug. 21. It was a sellout last year, so plan to be there early. It starts at 10 a.m., and the cost is $5 for ham, eggs, fruit, and many other goodies. The drawing for the winner of the cruise will take place, so bring your ticket stubs to see if you are the big winner.
The Cordes Lakes Community Association is sponsoring a photo contest for seventh- and eighth-graders. These students may submit their photos of Cordes Lakes for the 2011 calendar. If you are not a seventh- or eighth-grader and feel you have an outstanding photo, please bring it. Big Bug News editor Heidi Dahms Foster will choose the 12 winners at the brunch, 10 a.m. on Aug. 21.
Great Potato is on the way!
The Great Potato is coming on Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. More information later, as it is in the planning stages. Want to help plan? Attend the Tuesday Club meeting at 9 a.m. each Tuesday at the center.
Cordes Lakes Daze in planning stages
This year's event take place on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. The theme this year is Get Wild in Cordes Lakes, celebrating the abundant wildlife found in the area. Kickoff begins at 8 a.m. at Henry Cordes Park with a Walk-a-Thon, followed with the parade at 9 a.m. Both events will end at the Community Center.
Activities will include local vendors, games for children, bounce house, dunk tank, BBQ and entertainment. There also will be an art show and sale featuring local artists and entertainment by the Mayer band Gunpowder and Lead.

Cordes Exercise class
The Cordes Lakes Exercise Class takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays, now at 7 a.m. at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. Call Kimila, 713-3782, for information.

TOPS will follow the exercise class on Fridays at 8:15 a.m. at the Cordes Lakes Community Center.
Library has resource directory
New at the library is a Community Resource Directory developed by the Friends of the Library. It lists churches, food services, organizations, and many other resources available to the community.
You can look up information in the library's copy, or use the copy services at the library to make a copy for yourself. For information call 928-632-5492.
AA, Al-Anon meet in Cordes Lakes
Alcoholic Anonymous and Al-Anon Women's Meeting is every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Southern Baptist Church, Cordes Lakes. The first Wednesday of each month will be Step and Tradition Study. Call Len 632-9064 for more details.
Get a raffle ticket for a Baja cruise
Raffle tickets for the Cordes Cruiser's November Baja Cruise are on sale. Anyone can buy a raffle ticket for this cruise from any CLCA member. Tickets are $5 and provide an inside cabin for two. Contact Pat Williamson 632-8965 for the cruise information and Bill Slankard 632-9473 for raffle tickets. Cruise tickets to go cruising with the group also will be available for purchase.
The KASTOFF Program has restarted with a new innovation. The knit scarves are still being made for winter, but for the summer head bands and helmet head-toppers are being created from camo fabric and filled with an agent that remains cool when wet. To learn more, contact the library at 632-5492.
Cordes Lakes Hiking Club meets the first Monday of the month at the Cordes Lakes Community Center, 16357 S. Cordes Lakes Drive, at 8 a.m. Because of the warmer weather, the hikes will start earlier.
The September hike is cancelled because of the holiday weekend. Call Bill Slankard 632-9473 for the location of the next hike. Carpools will drive from the Center to the hike location. No registration necessary, just meet in the parking lot.
Third Thursday Fun takes a break
Fun Night in Cordes Lakes is on break for the summer. The Fun Night will resume in the fall.
Reaching Out in Love Ministry
Reaching Out in Love Ministry offers a helping hand to those in need of clothing, shoes, and other items, at no charge. If you would like to help, stop in with your donation of cash or gently used clothing. The ministry will be open August 20-21, 27-28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Location is 14720 S. Stagecoach Trail in Cordes Junction in the mobile at the Extra Self Storage.
Legion Post#122 meets third Tuesdays
American Legion Post #122 meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Cordes Lakes Community Center. The August meeting is cancelled. For information, contact Ron Johnson at 632-7819.
Cordes Lakes Food programs
There are four food programs in Cordes Lakes. Value Club is the second Wednesday and is payable at the Library the previous Friday. The 60-plus program (age and income restricted) is also on the second Wednesday. Commodities are on the third Wednesday, with produce on the fourth.
Tuesday Club open to new members
The Tuesday Club hosts many events in the community to raise money to maintain the community center and pay for other worthy projects. Please join us on Tuesday mornings at 9 at the Cordes Lakes Community Center.
Mayer Elders Club events and news
Mayer Elders Club day trip to Mazatzal Casino in Payson will take place on Aug. 19. Bus will leave the Mayer Senior Center at 7:30 a.m. and get back at about 5 p.m. The Senior Center will be open to serve sweet rolls and coffee. If needed, a bus with ramp for scooters and wheel chairs can be made available for the trip but you must still be able to walk up the ramp.
While visiting you may choose to dine at the Cedar Ridge Restaurant and The Grill. Complimentary soda, coffee and tea is available all day in the casino.

On Friday, Aug. 27, Mayer Elder's Club is hosting a spaghetti dinner starting at 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. The price is $6 for adults and $3.50 for children. Proceeds will go to Mayer Area Meals on Wheels. The price includes the entree, salad, garlic bread or rolls, dessert and drink.
Mayer Area Meals on Wheels will be celebrating Senior Month in September. Watch for different events going on at the Center each week. Thursday, Sept. 16 will be our first anniversary party. It's still in the planning stages but we'll have an auction again as we did last year. We'll be planning a thank you for all volunteers during the month also. On Tuesday, Sept. 14, Adam Bissell, of Hospice of the Pines, will be playing and singing for us at lunch time prior to his weekly Loss Support Group meeting. Anyone may join this group at any time. On Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 12:30 p.m. the Biological Resource Center will present a program on cremation and body donation.
The Hospice of the Pines Loss Support Group meets at the Mayer Elder's Center each Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Come and enjoy lunch at 11:30 a.m. provided by Meals on Wheels. Please join us if you've lost someone either recently or years ago, or if you are a full time caregiver.
Every Thursday afternoon, a Beading Class takes place at the Mayer Senior Center. Classes are taught by Myrna Bouchey and cost $3, which includes supplies. Beading is done from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and we enjoy lunch at the Center.
Boots 'n Spurs Saddle Club
Boots n' Spurs Saddle Club, meets the third Thursday of each month in Dewey at Guido's Pizza, 6 p.m. All ages welcome and you do not have to own a horse to be in the club. Membership $7 individual, $15 family per year.
