Richard Grant Sherod

Dick's years of struggling to breathe ended on April 18, 2010, with his wife at his side.

Dick was born in St. Paul on July 20, 1928, to Ralph and Florence Grant Sherod. He was a World War II Army veteran serving in Shemya, Alaska. He met his wife, June, at San Jose State University. Upon graduation, they married and moved to Prescott in 1954. He worked for Retail Credit Co., now Equifax, and later had his own real estate business in partnership with Arnold Weber.

For many decades Dick volunteered as an instructor of hunter safety, also as secretary/treasurer of Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited and the Prescott Trap and Skeet Club. He was an excellent marksman and won many trophies throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and trapshooter.

Upon retirement, he and his wife traveled many years as RVers, visiting most of the states and Canadian provinces. He and June volunteered 12 years at Birch Bay State Park in Washington. Their total of over 12,000 hours of service earned them the distinction of Volunteers of the Year for Washington State Parks.

He is survived by June, his wife for 57 years; and their goddaughter, Lorna Pabst Acosta.

At Dick's request, no memorial service will take place. His wish to be a body donor to Science Care is honored.

Hospice of the Pines assisted in his home care for 25 months. Dr. Jani and Rashmi Jani, Dick's nurse, provided wonderful care and invaluable support.

Memorial donations may be given to Hospice of the Pines, 13175 E. Highway 69, Dewey, AZ 86327; Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation, P.O. Box 36233, Phoenix, AZ 85067-6233; or the Alzheimer's Association, 225 Grove Ave., Prescott, AZ 86301.

Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.
