Sports Desk: Local martial artists sparkle in tournament

Members of Prescott Valley's Shinpu-Ren Family Karate fared well in the 2010 U.S.K.A. National Karate Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

The school, which was represented by five students and two instructors, won a combined five national title, five runner-up spots, three third-place finishes and two fourth-place finishes.

Here's a breakdown by competitor:

- Trey Snyder (6-7 age group, intermediate) Kata (forms) - third place; team sparring - third

- Loukas Collatos (8-9, beginning) team sparring - second

- Breanne Kinney (14-15, beginning) Kata,- first; team sparring - first; Koshiki (full-contact Kumite) - second; Kumite (point sparring)-second

- Travis Roach (16-17, advanced) Weapons (kobudo)- first; Chambarra (sport Kenjitsu) - fourth; Kumite (point sparring) - fourth

- Adrianna Andrews (8-9, beginning) Kumite (point sparring) - second; team sparring - second

Instructors

- Sensei Lori Morris (adult women's black belt) Kumite - first

- Sensei Alex Morris (adult men's black belt-Kumite (point sparring) - first; Kata (forms) - third

The school will be working hard to send a team to the World Championships in July.
