Carl Friedman

Carl Friedman, 87, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2010, at the Veterans Hospital Hospice, Prescott, Ariz. Carl was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 24, 1922. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was a P.O.W. in Germany. He moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he met and married his wife Shelley. She has been the love of his life for the last 61 years. Carl had a long and distinguished career as a school administrator for the Los Angeles Unified School District. After retiring, he and Shelley moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where he was an active member of the VFW and Jewish War Veterans. In 2004 they moved to Prescott.

An active member of the Jewish community, he was the principal of the Temple Beth Hillel religious school in North Hollywood, a founding member of three congregations in Las Vegas, and a member of Temple B'rith Shalom in Prescott. Carl and Shelley enjoyed traveling the world. He was an avid photographer and took pride in jewelry-making.

He was predeceased by his sisters Jessie and Ann, and his brother Hymie. He is survived by his wife Shelley; his children Judy, Bob, Diane and Barbara; grandchildren Karen, Linda, Chelsea, Josh, Seth, June, David and Christina; and great-granddaughter Olivia. Graveside service with full military honors will be held Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 9:20 a.m. at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements.
