Mary Sue Wirick, age 85, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2010. Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was the love that made us all strong. Born April 24, 1924, in Long Street, La., to Bernard and Willie Mae Timmons, she has been a resident of Arizona since 1945 when she became the wife of Major Keith Merrill of Safford, Ariz. After his death, while on his last mission in the Pacific, she had the great fortune to meet and marry Nelson S. Wirick. They were married for 53 wonderful years until his passing in 2001. They lived in Prescott, Ariz., for the last past 25 years.
Mother was the best domestic engineer we ever met. Her home was always welcoming. She had a flair for interior design, was a fabulous cook, an avid golfer, a dedicated bridge player and a lover of family and friends. She was a Southern gentlewoman, always gracious and elegant.
Mary Sue is survived by her three children, Kathleen Lyons, Stan Wirick (Diana) and Paula Merrill Belak (Robert); seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. No words can express how grateful we are to have had her in our lives, nor how deeply we will miss her. We thank the dedicated caregivers and staff of Encore and Hospice of the Valley who treated mother with love and dignity. And to Maria, a special thank-you. You were Mother's angel and ours as well.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Prescott at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to The Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of the Valley. Please visit www.hansenmortuary.com to send online condolences.
