Good Samaritan Society - Prescott Hospice receives CHAP accreditation
The Community Health Accreditation Program recently accredited the Good Samaritan Society - Prescott Hospice.
"Good Samaritan Society - Prescott Hospice is the only hospice agency in the quad-city area to receive CHAP accreditation," said Judy Schwartz, home health and hospice director.
The Community Health Accreditation Program, an independent, non-profit accrediting body, was the first accrediting body for community-based health care organizations in the United States. CHAP is authorized to determine if agencies providing home health and hospice services meet Medicare's conditions of participation.
"The accreditation gives us a stamp of approval for what we provide our patients and families," said Dr. Sam Downing, medical director for Good Samaritan - Prescott Home Health.
Good Samaritan provides a continuity of care for older people and those who need end of life care that no other agency in our area provides, Downing said.
Good Samaritan, a not-for-profit organization, has provided skilled care, assisted living, independent living, and home health and hospice services for seniors in the quad-city area since 1973.
"Many people have a general knowledge about what hospice care is, but may not know how to access it, and we help with that," Downing said.
The mission of the Good Samaritan Society - Prescott Hospice is to provide compassionate, patient directed care to individuals and their families as they journey towards the end of life.
"Hospice is life-affirming assistance for patients and their families near the end of life," said Laurie Lackland, R.N., clinical hospice director.
Many people receive hospice care in their home, Lackland said. For some, there comes a time when family and hospice can no longer provide the help a patient needs in their own home, she said.
For that reason, Good Samaritan Society - Prescott Hospice is looking forward to opening a 10-bed inpatient hospice facility in early 2010, where patients who need more assistance can receive it, Downing said.
