Oktoberfest at Mountain of Faith
Mountain of Faith Lutheran Church will conduct its 4th Annual Oktoberfest on Oct. 10, 4-7 p.m. at 20135 E. Stagecoach Trail in Cordes Lakes.
Enjoy music, German food, door prizes and more. Fun for the whole family. Cost is $6/adults, $3/children 12 and younger.
Library to sponsor fiction contest
Mayer Public Library is sponsoring a Holiday Fiction Contest for school-age kids. Original holiday stories should be submitted at the Mayer Public Library by Dec. 1, 2009. Winners of prizes will be announced on Dec. 15. All stories must be original and must be about one of the fall/winter holidays. For more information call Mayer Public Library at 632-7370.
Friday Night Fun is back
Each Friday from 6 - 9 p.m. there will be fun and games at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. Entry is free, but please bring a finger-food snack to share. There will be coffee and iced tea available, but put a few coins in the cup to pay for the cups, ice, and coffee. Get your card groups together and enjoy the company of your neighbors at the center.
Harvest Fest at Baptist Church
The Baptist Church at 20172 East Pinto will host a Harvest Fest on Oct. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be candy, games, cake walks, bake sales, as well as hot dogs and hamburgers. So after the Cordes Lakes Daze fun, finish the day at the Harvest Fest.
Cordes Lakes Library takes flu precautions
The Cordes Lakes Library requests that all patrons wash their hands before coming to the library, and then use the hand wipes available at the door. They hope to replace the hand wipes with an easier-to-use dispenser.
Librarians also are wiping down each returned book with the sanitizers prior to replacing them on the shelves.
Reaching Out in Love Ministry
Reaching Out in Love Ministry is a helping hand to those in need of clothing, shoes, and other items, at no charge. If you would like to help, stop in with your donation of cash or gently used clothing.
Love Ministry will be open on Oct. 16 and 17, then again Oct. 23 and 24. They are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are located at 14720 S. Stagecoach Trail in Cordes Junction in the mobile at the Extra Self Storage.
Please stop by if you need help or want to donate gently used items or money for rent and utilities.
There will be an information table at Cordes Lakes Daze on Oct. 31, so plan to stop by to learn more.
Book club meets Oct. 19
The Cordes Lakes Book Club meets the third Monday of the month, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. They discuss books, authors, sometimes choose a specific book, and trade their reading experiences. Cordes Lakes Community Center is located at 16357 S. Cordes Lakes Drive.
Great Potato event cancelled this year
The Great Potato event has been cancelled for this year. Many of our fabulous cooks are unable to be there to make their magic with food; therefore, the Tuesday Club has canceled the Oct. 19 Great Potato event.
Cordes Lakes Food programs
There are four food programs in Cordes Lakes. Oct. 14 is the Value Club which also has the new entree program, payable at the Library prior to Oct. 9.
The 60-plus program (age and income restricted) is also on Oct. 14, the second Wednesday. Commodities are on Oct. 21, the third Wednesday, with produce on the fourth Thursday, Oct. 22.
Cordes Lakes Daze in planning stage
Cordes Lakes Daze will take place on Oct. 31st and will start with a parade. The event will also feature a Chili Cook-Off. If you or your organization would like to be in the parade, please contact Pat Williamson at 632-8965. Since it is quite a distance and moves quickly, we recommend no walking groups. Of course Halloween is the theme.
The Chili Cook-Off has an entry fee of $10 with cash prizes for 1st and 2nd place. Five Samples will cost $5 and the sampler will cast their vote for the best chili. Please bring your own stove or method of cooking. You may pre-make your chili and bring it, but must have your own method of keeping it hot.
Cordes Exercise class
The Exercise Class is on Wednesday and Friday at 8 a.m. at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. Call Kimila, 713-3782, for information.
TOPS Club hours changing
TOPS hours are changing. TOPS will follow the exercise class on Friday at 9:15 a.m. at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. Now you can make twice the effort on the same day to achieve your goals.
Make a Difference Day in Cordes Lakes
Make a Difference Day on Oct. 24 is a national event with communities getting together to work on a project that will make a difference in their community.
The Cordes Lakes project will be the baseball field. Robbe Bressler is heading up this project and working with other communities, Little Leagues, etc., to gather information. Donations of labor or money are welcome. Contact Robbe at 632-7232.
Hiking Club meets first Tuesday
Cordes Lakes Hiking Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at the Cordes Lakes Community Center, 16357 S. Cordes Lakes Drive, at 10 a.m. The next hike is Nov. 3. Carpools will drive from the Center to the hike location. Be sure to bring a sack lunch.
No registration necessary, just meet in the parking lot.
Each month a person volunteers to be the leader for the next hike. They decide on where to go, so if you have a favorite place, join the group and volunteer to lead.

Drop off brush on third Saturdays
Brush Yard will reopen on the third Saturday of each month. Remember, this is NOT a trash dump, just burnable brush. This is for Cordes Lakes residents only, and you will be asked for your name and address, as a count of users is being kept.
If you are unable to make it on the available day and hours, contact Ron Giguere at 632-7552 to make an appointment to drop off your brush.
Mayer school Butter Braid Fundraiser
Mayer Elementary School is again selling the Butter Braids as a fundraiser. These are on sale from Oct. 26 through Nov. 9 and are available from your local elementary school children, or contact the school at 642-1100 for other salespersons. The butter braid is $10 and of that $4 goes directly to the school.
Learn about chronic diseases
The Mayer Elders Center will present information on new classes for those who have chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, COPD, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain or other ongoing health problems.
The free classes will start with an assessment meeting on Friday, Oct. 9. The classes will start Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 9-11:30 a.m. Chicken ala King is on the lunch menu that day.
Upcoming Mayer Elders Club events
Mayer Area Meals on Wheels presents Classic Car Cay at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Come see all the antique cars and meet the individuals who have worked so hard to make them look so wonderful. We may even have bluegrass music at lunch time. Bring your cameras.
Wednesday evening, Oct. 7, Mayer Elder's Game will host Bingo. Doors open at 5 p.m. and play starts at 6 p.m. The jackpot has been growing. Refreshments are served.
Thursday, Oct. 8 is our Vet's Day and monthly birthday celebration. Come say thank you to our Vets and enjoy the music of the SideKicks. They play hillbilly, country western, gospel and a little of "this and that." Lunch begins at 11:30 but the band will begin a little earlier.
Friday, Oct. 9, starting at 4:30 p.m. will be the monthly fish fry/chicken BBQ. The price is $7 for adults and $4 for children.
The assessment date for the Yavapai County's Healthy Living Class is Friday, Oct. 9, at 9:30 a.m. If you are interested in understanding a chronic disease you may have, this is the class for you. Please join us to sign up. The class will be held over a 6-week period starting Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Mayer Elder's Center.
Tuesday, Oct. 13, will be Yavapai County's Food Handlers class. Anyone working in a restaurant or volunteering for an organization in the kitchen must have this class. The time is 1 p.m. at the Mayer Elder's Center.
Saturday, Oct. 17, will be the Mayer Elder's Center Rummage Sale in downtown old Mayer starting at 8 a.m. There will also be a bake sale. Come make our junk your treasure!
Saturday, Oct. 24, is the Second Annual Mutt Show. The cost to enter your dog is only $5. Prize ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category - small, medium or large dog. The first place winners will compete for the "Best of Show." The winner will receive a ribbon and a trophy. We will serve a lunch consisting of hot dog, chips and drink for $2.50.

High Desert Park Card Bingo Night takes place Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Bring your drinks, friends and a snack to share, also $2.75 in nickels, dimes and quarters to play with.

Boots 'n Spurs Saddle Club events
Boots n' Spurs Saddle Club meets the third Thursday, at 6 p.m. at the Poland Junction, Rancho Vista Equine Center, Hwy. 69, Mile Post #275. Practice riding every Thursday at the arena 4 p.m. to dark. Club membership is $7 per person per year.
Upcoming Gymkhanas are Saturday, Oct. 24, 3 p.m. sign in. Event starts at 4 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. All ages welcome. The club will award prizes.

Charity rodeo and carnival in Cave Creek
Wayne Wilson Children's Charity Rodeo and Carnival will take place on Oct. 9-11. Rodeo events include Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Calf Roping, Team Roping, Bulldogging.
Special events include carnival rides, train rides, carnival games, celebrity autographs, and raffles.
Mutton Bustin', Stick Horse Race, Greased Pig Race and more are available for the kids.
Entry fee is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12, and 5 and younger are free. Parking fee is $3 per car or $1 with two or more cans of food to benefit the Foothills Food Bank.
Pumpkin Fest in Chino Valley
Every Saturday and Sunday in October, Windmill Farms at JC Ranch in Chino Valley will hold its Third Annual Pumpkin Festival. This year the Farms is expecting more than 50,000 visitors and has added numerous attractions and lots more family fun. Activities include tractor hay rides, petting zoo, pie eating contest, pumpkin painting contest, arts and crafts, food and beverages, live music, dancing and more.
Cost is $2 for general admission, and $5 for an all-day events pass (includes admission, petting zoo, train rides, jumpers and all other attractions).
