Head-on collision sends three to hospital

A three-car collision in the 3900 block of Highway 69 Tuesday morning sent three people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and briefly shut down one lane of traffic.

The accident happened at around 10:25 a.m. in front of the Costco store, Prescott police said in a press release.

Cottonwood resident Linda Burns, 63, driving a 2002 Toyota Corolla, had stopped in the westbound left turn lane designated for the Costco entrance, the release said.

Prescott Valley resident Francis Smith, 38, was driving eastbound on Highway 69 in a 1992 Jeep Cherokee when he drove left of center and collided head-on with the Corolla.

The force of the impact pushed the Corolla backwards into a 2003 Ford 3/4-ton pickup driven by 69-year-old Dewey resident Kenneth Davison, police said.

Davison was uninjured, but Burns and her 51-year-old passenger Loretta Preston, also of Cottonwood, went by ambulance to Yavapai Regional Medical Center East and West respectively.

Hospital spokeswoman Robbie Nicol said doctors treated and released Burns by late Tuesday afternoon but doctors were still evaluating Preston.

An ambulance took Smith to YRMC West where doctors treated him for minor injuries and then released him.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the collision and cited Smith for driving under the influence, the release said.
