I-17 accident under 69 overpass kills one, involves seven vehicles
An accident under the Highway 69 overpass on Interstate 17 Saturday claimed a Phoenix man's life and sent two others to area hospitals, Mayer Fire Chief Glenn Brown said.
"A southbound motorcycle with two passengers crossed into the northbound lane at mile post 262 at 6:56 p.m.," Brown said.
The motorcycle then caused a chain reaction involving seven other vehicles, one being a responding Yavapai County Sheriff's vehicle, he said.
The driver of the motorcycle, Terry S. Scully, 56, of Phoenix, was transported to Cordes Park for an air transport where the Native Air nurse pronounced him dead.
Mayer Fire took the motorcycle's passenger, a 43-year-old woman, to John C. Lincoln North Mountain.
LifeLine ambulance also responded to the accident and transported one person to the Yavapai Regional Medical Center East Campus in Prescott Valley.
Rescue units responded from all over the area, Brown said, including Black Canyon City Rescue 331, Central Yavapai Engine 54, two LifeLine Ambulances, Mayer Rescues 23 and 21 and Engine 22, Battalion 21 and car 201.
The accident of the seven vehicles involved 12 patients, with nine who were treated on scene and refused transport, Brown said.
The Department of Public Safety closed the northbound lanes completely for more than two hours, DPS stated in a press release.
