Michael Fenech had to knock off his own teammate to win the Arizona State Fencing Championship, but it was all in the name of a memorable weekend for the Prescott club, Salle d'Escrime.
Fenech bested Garrett Crooks in the championship final of the under-19 event. As a result, Fenech won the gold, Crooks took silver and another Salle d'Escrime teammate, Charlie Carlisi, won bronze to sweep the awards at the Mesa event this past weekend.
Fenech also won the Open State Championship by defeating Christian Marchant of Phoenix by a score of 15-7. Crooks placed third. Ehren Falk from Prescott also competed in the open foil competitions.
Based on points accumulated at Arizona tournaments throughout 2008-09, Fenech is the Open State Champion and Crooks is the Junior State Champion in Epee competition. Carlisi was third in Junior.
Fenech, Crooks, and Carlisi will compete in both the Senior and Junior Team epee events at Summer Nationals next month. Each of the teammates, along with Falk, will also compete in individual events.
Salle d'Escrime of Prescott meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Prescott Racquet Club. For more information call Pat Waples at 776-7150.
