D-H Library starts summer reading program next week

Dewey-Humboldt's Town Library, 2735 S. Corral St., kicks off its 2009 Summer Reading Program on June 9 with the theme "Be Creative!" for kids ages 3-12.

Children who register for the program win a prize for every six books they read at their reading level.

Community librarian Jeff Franklin said those who finish at least 12 books by Friday, July 26, will earn an invitation to a pizza party 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27.

In addition, children ages 7-12 have the chance to sign up for arts and crafts at the library from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, June 10, 17 and 24, as well as Wednesday, July 8, 15 and 22.

Dewey-Humboldt resident Mary Harbeck leads the first arts and crafts activity June 10, in which children will play games and learn how to invent their own game.

Storytime for those ages 3-6 takes place from 10 to 11:15 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 19 and 26, as well as Friday, July 10, 17 and 24.

D-H resident Heidi Remakel is planning a "Creative Food Fun" activity for the first storytime session, which will include refreshments.

The library also is offering family movies for all ages from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 20 and 27, as well as Saturday, July 11, 18 and 25.

The opening film is "Kung-Fu Panda" on June 13, and the library will provide food and drinks to those who participate.

On June 25, juggler Frank Cardamone entertains folks. Three weeks later, on July 16, the musical group Sticks & Tones performs.

Other activities at the library this summer include:

• Wii-Read: Starting June 11 and running every Thursday throughout the summer from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., a child can read a piece of literature for an hour, fill out a form and tell a staffer what he or she thought of the selection. They then can schedule an hour-long block to play a Nintendo Wii video game at the library on a Thursday.

• Wii-R-Family: On Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., families of at least one parent and a child can visit to play Wii for an hour. Playing time is limited for Wii-Read and Wii-R-Family, so staffers encourage families to schedule ahead.

The library is located next to the Kate Garber Activity Center and Humboldt Elementary School, 2750 S. Corral St., in Humboldt. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed for lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.), Thursdays from 12:30 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
