Prescott Valley suspect nabbed in Alabama
A former Yavapai County resident has been arrested in Alabama on numerous sex charges resulting from a 2007-2008 investigation.
Charles William Schaaf, 57, remains in custody in Shelby County, Alabama, awaiting extradition, said Yavapai County Sheriff's Office officials in a press release.
Schaaf was arrested on charges of child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, involving a minor in a drug offense, two counts of failing to notify authorities involving reportable offenses on a minor and nine counts of sexual exploitation of a child, the release said.
YCSO initially received information from Child Protective Services regarding a female child involved in sexual activity with an adult man. Schaaf was aware of the relationship but failed to report it, the press release said.
An investigation revealed that Schaaf allowed the girl and other teenagers to party at a home on Prescott East Highway.
Schaaf allegedly provided alcohol and drugs to the minors during parties while video taping their activities, the press release said.
While the investigation was underway, Schaaf moved to Casa Grande where detectives obtained a search warrant and seized his computer in 2008.
Within the past few weeks, computer forensic experts at the Department of Public Safety crime lab contacted YCSO to report finding child pornography on Schaaf's computer.
Detectives reviewed several thousand videos and images and confirmed many involved child pornography with some of the children estimated to be as young as nine.
When detectives tried to find Schaaf in Casa Grande, they couldn't locate him, the release said.
A few days later they learned he was in Alabama.
On July 17, a YCSO detective met with deputies from Shelby County, Alabama, and found Schaaf as he was leaving a home in their county. Schaaf is in custody in Alabama until authorities can return him to Yavapai County.
