Letter: Lutes loves country; can't stand Bush
The Courier specifically states that comments in "Letters to The Editor" may not be libelous, defamatory or false. While letters certainly state a personal opinion and are, therefore, not completely factual, blatant mistruths should not be permitted.
In a recent letter, I was accused of saying I hate my country because I bashed Bush. While I have certainly expressed strong feelings regarding perceived abuses during the Bush years, it can never be said that I hate my country. In Fact, it is because I love my country that I have been mourning the loss of moral clarity.
The reverse may stand as an example. Just because many conservatives bash liberals and President Obama, does that mean that they hate their country? I am sure they would be aghast to think they were being accused of being un-American or unpatriotic.
Yet, I have been called unpatriotic, a traitor, a socialist and un-American because I have likewise expressed my beliefs. The past eight years have been a nightmare for those of us who disagreed with Republicans.
Yes, I own land in Canada and may someday move there if housing prices ever recover. If I leave, it will be with sadness and joy to see my country, America, restored to an esteemed place in the world because we have returned to the rule of law, reverence to the Constitution, and ethical world citizenship. Obama has restored that faith.
Being accused of hating my country is completely out of bounds, untrue, and unacceptable.
