Letter: Country still has a large political divide
My thanks to Linda Lutes for her letter on the upcoming change in our country's political leadership.
It so clearly demonstrates the political divide that remains. For quite some time she has been an outspoken critic of President Bush. It's her constitutional right to voice her opinion. But I have to smile when she states regarding the election of Obama: "I pray we can join together in wishing him well for his success is truly our success."
She also wrote "we have risen above the forces of hate, intolerance and bigotry". In part, I agree with both statements but then I have to wonder, if a president's success is our country's success, why did she not apply the same axiom for the past eight years?
And just who demonstrated hate and intolerance for the same time period? The logical conclusion is that those who have relentlessly castigated President Bush wanted him and our country to fail. Since the election people have asked me repeatedly if I want President-Elect Obama to succeed. What exactly does that mean? For me, I want President-Elect Obama to succeed at keeping our country safe from terrorist attack - as President Bush has so admirably done ever since 9-11.
On the other hand, I am deeply skeptical of his proposed social, economic and environmental policies and philosophically oppose most of them. I hope that those who choose to voice their opposition to President Obama will do so in a respectful way unlike the hate and intolerance we have all heard for too long.
