Letter: Let's hope new year fulfills great promise

EDITOR:

As 2009 marks a new beginning, I have a heartfelt message to our little town and all Americans.

I am ecstatic to hope once again and to see the prejudices of the past overcome with a new vision. We have risen above the forces of hate, intolerance and bigotry to feel in our hearts the promise that America holds for all.

In my dreams, I see a shining sea stretching out to embrace all nations. Let us make peace a renewed reality and restore America as the beacon of hope for the best that is within people of every belief, race and tongue.

We have enough poverty, violence and malevolence of every sort to block out the intrinsic good that is in humanity. If this season teaches us anything, let it remind us of the truth that good overcomes evil and that the Prince of Peace came to bring us a new gospel, that of loving one another.

As Dylan so aptly said, "If you can't lend a hand then get out of the way for the times they are a changing." As a nation of inherent optimism we can rise above differences for the common good. We may be called to sacrifice putting aside fears and disappointments. Let us hold hands symbolically and literally for there is much work to be done.

Obama is our new president and I pray we can join together in wishing him well for his success is truly our success. Expectantly, may we look forward to celebrating his inauguration and attending to the business at hand putting people back to work, rebuilding our infrastructure, restoring our national pride and uplifting all Americans who will rise or fall together.

Please give those of us who still believe our moment in the sun. Happy New Year!
