Obituary: Virginia Sample Knudtson

Virginia Sample Knudtson died Jan. 3, 2009 in Yuma, Ariz. She was born April 27, 1920 in Spring Valley, Minn. to James Milo Sample and Evangeline DuMez Sample. She married Orville Knudtson Sept. 14, 1944.

As a scholar, she attended public schools in Spring Valley. She graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1942. She received her Masters degree from Arizona State University in 1964 and continued her post-graduate studies at Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University and University of Arizona.

As a life-long educator, she started her teaching career in Milford, Iowa, continued in Wykoff, Minn. and finished at Prescott High School from 1964 to 1983.

The Arizona English Teachers Association named her English Teacher of the Year in 1980.

As a woman of faith, she treasured an active membership in the American Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prescott. She organized and expanded the church library, was involved with a book discussion group, and participated in the life of the church.

As a booklover she read widely and prodigiously. She shared that passion with her students, her colleagues, her family and her friends.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Orville Knudtson; her sons, Jon and Kris; her sister Barbara Schuler of Waupaca, Wis.; her sister-in-law Merle Sample of Tempe, Ariz.; and many friends, colleagues and students.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to American Evangelical Lutheran Church for library development or to the charity of your choice.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 at American Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1085 Scott Drive in Prescott.
