Chino Valley man dead in police shooting

A 26-year-old Chino Valley man is dead and the Chino Valley police officer that shot him is on routine paid administrative leave after a traffic stop went bad Wednesday at around 7:30 p.m.Police are not identifying the man or the officer, who is an eight-year veteran of the Chino Valley Police Department.The incident began when an officer tried to stop a vehicle that was driving erratically on Yellow Brick Road, police said in a press release.The driver sped southbound before crashing through a fence in the 1900 block of Yellow Brick Road, disabling the vehicle.As the officer approached, the driver yelled at the officer to shoot him and put his hand in his pocket, claiming he was armed, police said.The man kept coming towards the officer, who retreated while ordering the man to stop. The man kept coming "while making hostile and aggressive actions," police said, and the officer, who police said "feared for his life," shot the man several times.Emergency workers pronounced the man dead at the scene.Members of the Arizona Department of Public Safety's special investigations unit are investigating the incident, along with detectives from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.Watch dCourier.com for further details as they become available.
