Shalom Eis is a unique type of businesswoman.
She's a graphic artist who uses the guidance she gets from Yavapai College's Small Business Development Center to take her art to new levels.
The unique thing about Eis is that she isn't old enough to drive a car or vote.
Eis, 13, is the SBDC's youngest client honing her skills crafting greeting cards from her Shalom's Peaceful Art from the Heart business out of her Dewey home.
"I always thought it would be kinda cool to have a business," she said.
For now, Eis uses life's situations to draw "whimsical" pictures of people and animals with a popular adage.
"I like that it's bright and that it's happy," she said.
Her mom, Cindy, is perfectly content with allowing Shalom's art passion to blossom.
"I really just want to be more of an inspiration to her," she said. "If people want to buy the cards and other things she offers, that would be great."
Center Director Rick Marcum first met Shalom in late July 2008 and quickly saw her artistic talent. And Marcum said Shalom can use her artistic abilities in a number of ways that can pay for her college education and beyond.
"She's got that kind of skill and at her age, anything's possible," he said.
Cindy home schools Shalom and said that art is part of her daily routine.
When she's doing her artwork, Cindy said Shalom starts with a pencil sketch, outlines it with a black pen, then uses markers and colored pencils to shade it and get the look she wants.
And Shalom said she's already sold some greeting cards.
In the future, Shalom said she want to go to college and pursue a double major in creative writing and art with a music minor.
When she's not crafting cards, Shalom puts together a bi-monthly newsletter for her friends she calls "Flying Pickles" that includes continuing stories on a group of six friends she calls "The Friendship Attic."
And Shalom said she's considering getting into coloring books, calendars and illustrating her own stories in the future.
