Vincent M. Salmon

Vincent M. Salmon of Kingman, Ariz., died Aug. 9, 2009. He was 81 years old. He was born April 23, 1928, in his grandparents' farm home in Crawford County, Pa.

He came to Arizona in 1953 and was a teacher at Mohave County Union High School in Kingman for one year. He continued his work in Arizona education for 33 years in Benson Elementary and High School, Tucson at the University of Arizona, Prescott at Yavapai College, Kingman at Mohave Community College and Northern Arizona University extension in Mohave County. From 1972 until his retirement in 1986, he served as Dean of Instruction and Vice President of Mohave Community College. He earned a B.S. degree from Penn State and his Master's and Doctorate degrees were from the University of Arizona.

Dr. Salmon was a past president of the Ariz. Voc. Ag. Teachers, Benson Lions Club, Arizona High School - College Relations Council, Arizona Higher Education Coordinating Council, Mohave County School Administrators Association, and the University of Ag. Alumni Council. He was a former Commander of Post 45 of the American Legion and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean era. He was a former member of the Presbyterian Church, Republican Precinct Committeeman and the Private Industry Council member (JTPA).

Dr. Salmon has been a member, president, historian and volunteer for the Arizona Historical Route 66 Association of Arizona since 1988. He was involved in all 22 annual Fun- Runs and his 1957 Chevy pickup graced many parades and events in surrounding towns as well as Kingman. He has traveled historic Route 66 many times between Chicago and Los Angeles from 1946 till his death.

A meeting of family and friends is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, and memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, both at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home in Kingman, with his brother, Dr. James H. Salmon, officiating. Inurnment will be at the Mountain View Cemetery in Kingman immediately following the service and the family wishes to invite you to the Powerhouse for a reception located in downtown Kingman on Route 66.

Dr. Salmon is survived by sons Victor of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kenneth of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Sheila of Flagstaff, Ariz.; as well as six grandchildren, Marci, Craig, Samantha and Morgan Salmon, all of New Mexico, and Morgan and Jeremy Griffis of Flagstaff, Ariz. Also siblings Elaine Baxter of Detroit, Mich., and Dr. James Salmon and Dr. Verel Salmon of Erie, Pa.; and significant other Linda Hawn.

Salmon is preceded in death by his former wife Joy Wilson Salmon in 1985 and his brother Lowell G. Salmon of Denton, Md., in 2009.
