OLLI programs at YC Prescott Valley campus
OLLI (the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) is coming to Prescott Valley. OLLI members no longer will have to navigate the Highway 69 traffic to participate in learning groups.
Sally Landes, president of OLLI at Yavapai College in Prescott, said the program would begin offering Friday classes (learning groups) on Sept. 11 at the Yavapai College Prescott Valley campus.
Landes said the Prescott Valley classes would follow the same format as those offered on the Prescott
The first six-week classes include "Designing Your Bucket List," "Foreign Films," "Medieval Europe: Crisis and Renewal," and "World Population: Program or Not."
OLLI Vice Chairman Hal Freedman said expanding into Prescott Valley is an "outgrowth of the board's vision where OLLI is more available to the membership. This is the first of a series of roll-outs where OLLI is available to people who may not be able to make it to the main campus."
Freedman said future plans include offering OLLI classes online, both real-time and self-paced.
"Online classes would allow people to hook up with OLLIs nationwide," Freedman said.
OLLI offers seniors, and people of any age, the opportunity to continue their education simply for the love of learning.
OLLI started in 1993 when a group of professionals enrolled in classes at Yavapai College. The retirees met and introduced the Yavapai Learning Institute to the college.
Today, OLLI is a self-directed membership organization within the college whose goal is to meet the lifelong learning needs and interests of retirement-age people in the tri-city area. OLLI operates almost exclusively with volunteers, who teach all of the classes.
OLLI offers five sessions throughout the year. Classes generally run from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.
Registration from the Fall 1 session begins Aug. 10.
The new class schedule is available at the OLLI office located on the Yavapai College campus at 1100 E. Sheldon St., Building 31 in Prescott.
