Four fencers from Salle d'Escrime, Prescott's local fencing club, are taking their game to the national stage.
Charlie Carlisi, Garrett Crooks, Michael Fenech and Ehren Falk clinched their spots in this July's national championships with top-three finishes at a recent qualifying event in Mesa.
Carlisi captured first place and Crooks took second in the Mesa Junior Epee competition. As a result, Carlisi will fence in two epee events at nationals after earning his "E" national rating in Mesa. Crooks, who already held the higher "C" rating, will fence in the higher-rated epee event at nationals.
Joining them will be Fenech, who pre-qualified for the Junior Epee national event after a third-place finish in Mesa in the sabre competition. He will fence both epee and sabre at nationals. Along with Carlisi and Crooks, Fenech will also fence in two Team Epee events, Junior and Open as the only teams from Arizona to fence in team competition.
Falk, too, will head to the big stage. By placing in Mesa, the foil fencer qualified to compete in both the National Cadet Foil event and the Division 3 Open Foil event.
The national tournament takes place in Dallas in early July.
