Lady Bears rally to win region opener
The Bradshaw Mountain Lady Bears have a history of come-from-behind games this season, and Monday night's region opener in Prescott Valley was no different. After trailing visiting Coconino though five innings, BMHS Coach Janet Jensen said the Lady Bears "got the wheels going" for the 5-4 victory.
Coconino's first three runs were unearned, on some of Bradshaw's six errors in the game. The Lady Panthers led 4-0 after scoring one in each of the first four innings.
"I think the girls put too much pressure on themselves for their first region game," Jensen said.
The Lady Bears finally put runs on the home side of the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Jessica Burkhart reached first on a dropped third strike, then Shawn Haese got a base hit. Bretteney Stults' single scored Burkhart, and Danielle Hernandez' base hit plated Haese, to make it 4-2.
"The best part was everybody batted, so we got to the top of the order in the seventh," Jensen said.
After holding the visitors in the top of the seventh, the Lady Bears loaded the bases when Burkhart and Haese each reached on singles and Stults made it to first on an error. Another Coco error with Grace Klawitter at bat allowed Burkhart to cross the plate to make it a 1-run game. Hernandez's single scoring Haese knotted the game 4-4. Freshman Kendra Fisher next stepped to the plate and "belted a nice base hit, a walk-off single" when Hernandez came home.
Haese, Hernandez and Fisher each batted 2-for-4, while Haese scored twice, Hernandez had two RBIs and Fisher drove in the winning run.
Bradshaw travels to Page Friday and Kellis on Saturday. They host Flagstaff Tuesday.
