The Prescott Jazz Society/Cannon Academy will present a music workshop Oct. 25 and 26 in the Prescott Quality Inn Resort & Conference Center, with select professionals under the directorship of Walter Barr.
Walter Barr is a professor of music at the Metropolitan State College of Denver, where he has served as the department chair, director of bands and director of jazz studies.
The workshop offers refining techniques designed to elevate learning abilities beyond the standard procedures, said Academy director Milt Cannon.
The sessions will emphasize the importance of developing practice programs designed to catalyze immediate progress in specific areas, and provide a clearer insight of jazz composition and improvisation.
Students currently participating in school music programs will receive 50-percent discounts for full enrollment in the workshop.
Students from single-parent families will receive full scholarship consideration.
"Students that are capable and want to perform in a big-band concert will experience an energetic, exuberant and inspirational mentor (in Dr. Barr)," Cannon said.
Barr has conducted for Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Shew, Dizzy Gillespie, Terence Blanchard, Jon Faddis, Clare Fischer, Sunny Wilkenson, and others. His trumpet performance credentials include work with Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Henry Mancini, Lou Rawls, Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Sammy Davis Jr., Nancy Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Dizzy Gillespie, Burt Bacharach, Lena Horne, Michelle LeGrand and Dave Brubeck.
Enrollment deadline is Oct. 1.
Other instructors include: Alicia Cunningham, M.A. (vocal clinic), Albert Sarko, M.A. (jazz piano workshop), Billy Mitchell (audition preparation workshop) and Don Cunningham (jazz vocal workshop).
The Prescott Jazz Society/Cannon Academy has worked since 1993 to successfully establish live jazz as a viable entertainment choice in Prescott.
