Editorial: Election draws near; think, act

Seven days remain until registered voters to go to the polls. It's the General Election.

That means at least four things:

• Voters who received mail-in ballots have that amount of time to finish their selections and send them back; to be sure they get to the county Elections Department in time, do not mail them after Thursday.

If you do not mail your ballot and to be sure it arrives in time, hand deliver it before 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, to your choice of the drop boxes at the Prescott and Cottonwood county offices, the Prescott Valley Civic Center, Chino Valley Town Hall, Dewey-Humboldt Town Hall, Camp Verde Town Hall, Sedona City Hall or the Yavapai-Prescott Community Center.

• Voters have those seven days to finish educating themselves and making their preliminary choices or plans for Election Day.

The first part (choices) is who or what you will be voting for. For information on all of the races and initiatives, visit the newspaper online at and click on the "Elections 2008" link. There you will find our coverage so you can educate yourself on the hopefuls.

The second part of that plan involves knowing where to go. If you are uncertain as to your polling place, visit or call 771-3248.

• Third, understand the importance of this election. Voters will be deciding on, among other items, jail taxes, an education district, school and fire boards, state lawmakers, congressional and Corporation Commission seats, on down to a host of propositions and President of the United States.

All registered voters carry with them the privilege and responsibility to help chart the direction of this county, state, and the country. Your choices count, so vote educated, responsibly and early.

• Finally, it will mark the end to a tumultuous election season that began more than a year ago and involved many headlines, twists and turns. That's good news in itself, thank you.
