Obituary: Barbara Irene Worth

Barbara Irene Worth passed away on May 5, 2008, at her home in Valencia, Calif. The daughter of Don and Norma Woods, she was born in Los Angeles on Nov. 22, 1921, and grew up in South Pasadena.

She attended South Pasadena High School and later graduated from Stanford University, spending a summer term at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. After graduation, she joined the Women's Naval Service during WWII. She was stationed in Boston at the Squantum Naval Air Station as a control tower operator. She married Walter Dyson Worth in 1946 and they raised their family in South Pasadena and Glendale, Calif. In later years, she was an executive secretary for Albert Van Luit Wallcoverings and Van de Kamp's Foods. She and Walter retired to Prescott, Ariz., in 1981, where Barbara volunteered at the Sharlot Hall Museum and was an active member of the photography club. They traveled, hiked and fly-fished happily for 20 wonderful years. Barbara then returned to California to be near her children. She resided at Summerhill Villa in Valencia, Calif.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, and her daughter, Elizabeth Irene Nelson of Chester, Calif.

She is survived by her sons, Don Dyson Worth of Valencia and Stephen Woods Worth of Burbank; daughter-in-law Carley Worth of Valencia; and son-in-law Robert Nelson of Chester, Calif. Also surviving her are grandchildren Sarah Worth of Valencia and Patrick Nelson of Ketchikan, Alaska; and great-grandson Dante Nelson of San Luis Obispo.

Services will be private. Donations may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association.
